Alesia was the capital of the Mandubii, a Gallic tribe allied with the Aedui, located on Mont-Auxois near modern Alise-Sainte-Reine in Burgundy, France. The Celtic hillfort, covering roughly 97 hectares on a plateau surrounded by steep cliffs, was the site of the Battle of Alesia in 52 BC, in which Julius Caesar defeated Vercingetorix and the combined Gallic forces, effectively ending the Gallic Wars. After its conquest the settlement continued as a Gallo-Roman town.
