Massalia

Massalia was an ancient Greek colony on the Mediterranean coast east of the Rhone, settled by Ionian Greeks from Phocaea around 600 BC. It grew rapidly into the center of Greek trade in the western Mediterranean, founding outposts along the coasts of present-day Spain, southern France and northwestern Italy, and remained independent until Rome's campaign in Gaul in the 1st century BC. Its ruins survive within the modern city of Marseille, considered the oldest city in France.
