Occitania is the historical region of southern Europe where the Occitan language has traditionally been spoken, covering much of the southern third of France along with the Aran Valley of Spain, Monaco, and the Occitan Valleys of Italy. Home to some 16 million people, it is defined by shared linguistic and cultural heritage across this territory rather than by a single political boundary, and has retained distinct traditions despite centuries of political fragmentation.
