Aachen

Aachen is a city in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, at the westernmost edge of Germany where it borders both Belgium and the Netherlands. It served as the political center of the Frankish empire under Charlemagne and was the site where 31 Holy Roman Emperors were crowned between 936 and 1531, a role that earned it a reputation as the cradle of Europe. With roughly 264,000 residents it ranks as the 27th largest city in Germany. Aachen today is a center of technology and education, anchored by RWTH Aachen University, one of the leading engineering schools in the country, and its medieval cathedral and city hall remain landmarks of its imperial past.
