Alcimoennis

Alcimoennis was a fortified Celtic oppidum of the late La Tene period, dated to around the second and first centuries BC, on the Michelsberg hill at Kelheim in Bavaria, Germany, at the confluence of the Danube and Altmuhl rivers. The name is recorded in Ptolemy's Geography, and the site is associated with a Celtic people possibly a sub-tribe of the Vindelici. Covering roughly 600 hectares, it was one of the largest such settlements in southern Germany and its economy centered on iron mining and smelting; it was abandoned around the middle of the first century BC, possibly amid conflict with Germanic tribes or Roman expansion.
