Baden-Baden

Baden-Baden is a spa town in the German state of Baden-Wurttemberg, on the northwestern edge of the Black Forest along the small Oos river, about 10 kilometers east of the Rhine and the French border. Its thermal springs were already known to the Romans, who called the settlement Aquae and later Aurelia Aquensis, with bath ruins dating to the reign of Emperor Caracalla in the 210s AD; the doubled name Baden-Baden distinguishes the town from other similarly named places in Central Europe. In 2021 the town was inscribed as part of the transnational UNESCO World Heritage Site known as Great Spa Towns of Europe, recognizing its historic spas and the architecture that exemplified the European spa town in the eighteenth through twentieth centuries. As of December 31, 2024, Baden-Baden had 56,881 residents.
