Borkum

Borkum is an island and town in the Leer district of Lower Saxony in northwestern Germany, in the Wadden Sea about 30 kilometers from the mainland. It is the largest and westernmost of the East Frisian Islands, mentioned by ancient Roman writers, and it once formed part of a larger island mass before splitting apart. Borkum shifted from a center of whaling and, at times, piracy in the 18th century into a tourist destination beginning in 1834. It has a population of 4,325 and hosts renewable energy infrastructure, including an offshore wind park established in 2015.
