East Berlin was the capital of East Germany, the German Democratic Republic, from 1949 to 1990, formed from the Soviet occupation sector of Berlin after the Second World War. It was separated from West Berlin by the Berlin Wall from 1961 to 1989 and reached a peak population of about 1.28 million in 1988. German reunification on October 3, 1990 ended its existence as a separate city.
