Freiburg im Breisgau

Freiburg im Breisgau is the fourth largest city in the German state of Baden-Wurttemberg, in the southwestern corner of the country near the edge of the Black Forest. Founded in 1120 by the House of Zahringen, it grew into a prosperous medieval trading town and later into a noted university city, home since 1457 to Albert Ludwig University, one of the oldest universities in Germany. With about 237,500 residents, Freiburg is known for its Gothic Freiburg Minster, its network of small open water channels called Bachle, and its reputation as a center of environmental and sustainable urban planning.
