Karlsruhe

Karlsruhe is the third largest city in the German state of Baden-Wurttemberg, standing on the right bank of the Rhine between Mannheim-Ludwigshafen and Strasbourg near the French border. Margrave Charles III William founded the city in 1715 after a dispute with his previous capital, Durlach, and it went on to serve as capital of the Margraviate, Electorate, Grand Duchy and Republic of Baden through 1945. The city is known for a distinctive fan shaped plan, with 32 streets radiating outward from Karlsruhe Palace like the spokes of a wheel, earning it the nickname fan city, or Facherstadt. Today Karlsruhe functions as the legal center of Germany, home to the Federal Constitutional Court and the Federal Court of Justice, and its population stood at 308,436, making it the 22nd largest city in the country.
