Lahr is a city in western Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany, about 50 kilometers north of Freiburg and 40 kilometers southeast of Strasbourg, with a population of 50,775 as of the end of 2024, making it the second-largest city in the Ortenau district after Offenburg. Founded around 1220 and chartered in 1278, it grew as a trade center, was burned by French troops in 1677, and hosted Canadian NATO forces at CFB Lahr from 1967 to 1994; its population passed 20,000 after 1950 amid postwar growth. The Storchenturm, a surviving tower of the former Geroldseck castle, remains one of the city's best-known landmarks.
