Oppidum Steinsburg

Steinsburg is the common name for the remains of a Celtic hillfort, or oppidum, on the Kleiner Gleichberg mountain in the Thuringia region of Germany, near the town of Romhild. The fortification consisted of three concentric rings of dry stone walls built from the volcanic basalt that surrounds the mountain, with the outermost wall stretching three kilometers and enclosing an area of sixty six hectares. Extensive quarrying of the site beginning in the nineteenth century destroyed much of the fortification but uncovered a large number of Celtic metal artifacts, many of which are displayed at the Steinsburg Museum built on the site in 1929.
