Stendal is a town in the Altmark region of Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, and the historic capital of that region. It was an important member of the Hanseatic League in the medieval period, and its townscape preserves Brick Gothic architecture including its former cathedral and surviving medieval gates. The archaeologist Johann Joachim Winckelmann, a foundational figure in the study of classical art history, was born in the town in 1717.
