Andros (ancient city)

Andros was the chief city of, and a polis on, the island of Andros in the Aegean Sea, Greece, from which the city took its name. It was colonized by Ionians and grew important enough to found colonies at Acanthus and Stageira in Chalcidice around 654 BCE. In 480 BCE the Andrians were compelled to join the fleet of the Persian king Xerxes I during his invasion of Greece, after which the Athenian statesman Themistocles attempted to levy a large sum of money from the city.
