Anticyra (Thessaly)

Anticyra, or Antikyra, sometimes called Malian Antikyra to distinguish it from a namesake in Phocis, was an ancient Greek polis on the right bank of the Spercheios River near its mouth on the Malian Gulf, in the Malis district of Thessaly, tentatively identified with the modern village of Kostalexis near Lamia. Mount Oeta lay to its south, and like its Phocian namesake it was known in antiquity for cultivating the medicinal plant hellebore.
