Apollonia (Mygdonia)

Apollonia was an ancient town in Mygdonia, a district of the kingdom of Macedon, sited south of Lake Volvi and north of the Chalcidice mountains between Amphipolis and Thessalonica; its remains lie near the modern village of Nea Apollonia in central Macedonia, Greece. It is first attested in the fourth century BC by Xenophon and later flourished as a waystation on the Roman Via Egnatia, the road linking the Adriatic to Byzantium. The apostle Paul is recorded in the Acts of the Apostles as having passed through the town on his second missionary journey. Excavations have uncovered about 3.1 kilometers of fortifications, pottery workshops, and an Early Christian basilica showing the town remained inhabited into late antiquity.
