Arcesine (Karpathos)

Arcesine, also known as Arkesine or Arceseia, was a town of ancient Greece on the island of Karpathos. Its name survives through an inscription recording its tribute payment to the Delian League. The archaeologist Ludwig Ross identified its site with the modern location of Arkasa, on a promontory on the west coast of the southern part of the island, where a fourth or fifth century Christian church mosaic has also been found, showing that the site continued to be occupied and used for worship after antiquity.
