Boeae

Southern Europe

Boeae, also called Boiai, Boea or Boia, was a town in the south of ancient Laconia between the promontories of Malea and Onugnathos, on the bay named for it, the Boeatic Gulf. Tradition held that it was founded by Boeus, one of the Heraclidae, who led colonists there from the neighboring towns of Etis, Aphrodisias and Side. It later belonged to the Eleuthero-Lacones and was visited by Pausanias, who recorded a temple of Apollo in its forum and temples of Aesculapius and of Sarapis and Isis elsewhere in the town, along with the ruins of another temple of Aesculapius and Hygieia seven stadia away.
