Callium

Callium, also called Kallion or Callipolis, was the chief town of the Callienses, a people of ancient Aetolia, situated on the eastern edge of the region on one of the heights of Mount Oeta along the road from the Spercheus valley into Aetolia. The town was destroyed by an invading force of Gauls in 279 BC and was later rebuilt, before its remains were eventually inundated by a modern dam; excavations between 1977 and 1979 uncovered fortifications, sanctuaries and civic buildings, with finds now held in Greek museums.
