Casthanaea, also spelled Casthanea, Kasthanaia or Castanea, was a town and polis of ancient Magnesia at the foot of Mount Pelium, home to a temple of Aphrodite Casthanitis. Herodotus mentions it in his account of the storm that battered the fleet of Xerxes I off this stretch of coast, and Pliny also records the town. The chestnut tree, which still grows abundantly on the eastern side of Mount Pelium, is said to have taken its Greek and modern European names from Casthanaea. Its site lies below the modern village of Keramidi.
