Ceryneia

Europe

Ceryneia was a town and polis of ancient Achaea, set on high ground west of the Cerynites River and south of Helice. Not originally one of the twelve Achaean cities, it later took the place of Aegae after Mycenaeans displaced from their city by the Argives in 468 BCE swelled its population, and it joined the revived Achaean League around 280 BCE, producing Marcus, the League's first sole general, in 255 BCE. The site is also known in myth as home of the Ceryneian Hind, one of the labors of Heracles, and by the geographer Strabo's time it had become dependent on the city of Aegium. Its ruins stand on the heights above where the Cerynites River emerges from the mountains, near modern Mamousia.
