Cleonae (Athos)

Cleonae, also known as Cleonai or Kleonai, was an ancient city on the Acte, or Akte, peninsula, the easternmost of the three peninsulas that make up ancient Chalcidice, in what is now Greece, on its western coast south of Thyssus. The historian Thucydides records that among the cities of the peninsula, Sane was a colony of Andros, while Thyssus, Cleonae, Acrothoum, Olophyxus, and Dium had a mixed, bilingual population drawn mainly from Pelasgians, Bisaltians, Crestonians, and Edoni, with a smaller number of Chalcidians. Strabo states that its earliest inhabitants were Pelasgians from Lemnos, and that it was later colonized by Euboean settlers from Chalcis. Heraclides Lembus likewise records that Chalcidians settled there. Cleonae was a member of the Delian League, appearing on the tribute lists paid to Athens during the Peloponnesian War.
