Corinth (modern city)

Europe

Corinth is a city in the Peloponnese region of Greece, about 78 kilometers west of Athens near the Isthmus of Corinth, with 30,816 residents within city limits and 38,485 in the municipal unit at the 2021 census, the second largest city in the Peloponnese region and capital of the Corinthia regional unit. Built as New Corinth starting in 1858 after a magnitude 6.5 earthquake destroyed the earlier settlement three kilometers to the southwest, it was rebuilt again after further earthquake damage in 1928 and a fire in 1933, and it now serves as a major industrial and road hub for the Peloponnesian peninsula, near the Corinth Canal, completed in 1893, which passes about 4 kilometers to its east.
