Daulis was a town of ancient Phocis in Greece, near the border with Boeotia on the road from Orchomenus and Chaeroneia to Delphi, and its site is preserved in the modern village of Davleia. Homer lists it among the Phocian towns in the Catalogue of Ships in the Iliad, and Greek legend made it the home of King Tereus in the tragic story of Procne and Philomela. The Persians destroyed the town during Xerxes' invasion in 480 BC, and Philip II of Macedon destroyed it again at the end of the Third Sacred War in 346 BC, though it was rebuilt each time; Rome captured the fortified town by stratagem in 198 BC, and near the end of antiquity Daulis became the seat of a Christian bishopric.
