Galepsus (Thrace)

Galepsus, also spelled Galepsos, was a Greek city in the region of Edonis in ancient Thrace, later part of Macedon, located east of Phagres and about seventeen kilometers from Amphipolis. It belonged to the Delian League and had been founded as a colony of Thasos. After the fall of Amphipolis, the Spartan commander Brasidas occupied Galepsus in 424 BC, and the Athenian Cleon recovered it the following year. Later, Perseus of Macedon, fleeing the Romans after his defeat at Pydna, sailed to the mouth of the Strymon and on toward Galepsus, stopping there before continuing to Samothrace.
