Geronthrae

Geronthrae, also recorded as Geronthrai, Geranthrae or Gerenthrae, was a town of ancient Laconia in Greece, situated in a commanding position on the southwestern face of a mountain above the plain of the Eurotas river. The traveler Pausanias recorded that the town held a temple and sacred grove of the god Ares, where a yearly festival excluding women was celebrated, and that fountains of drinking water surrounded its agora while a temple of Apollo stood on its acropolis.
