Kastoria

Kastoria is a city in the Western Macedonia region of northern Greece, built on a promontory on the western shore of Lake Orestiada and preceded on the site by the Roman era town of Celetrum. Its name, meaning place of beavers, reflects the animal's former presence in the lake, and the city preserves dozens of surviving Byzantine and medieval churches alongside well preserved Ottoman era neighborhoods. Kastoria has long been known as a center of the fur trade, a business that expanded from supplying Byzantine courtiers in the medieval period into a major European fur market by the sixteenth century.
