Kavala

Kavala is a historic port city in northern Greece, the principal seaport of eastern Macedonia and the capital of the Kavala regional unit, on the Bay of Kavala with a population of about 66,376 at the 2021 census. Founded as Neapolis in the 7th century BC by settlers from Thasos, it was later known as Christoupolis in the Byzantine period before taking its present name in the 16th century, and it has served since antiquity as a gateway for travelers and merchants between Europe and the Middle East. Kavala is the birthplace of Muhammad Ali of Egypt and preserves notable Ottoman and Byzantine landmarks, including a fortress and an aqueduct.
