Mesambria (Aegean Sea)

Mesambria, also spelled Mesembria, was an ancient Greek city on the coast of ancient Thrace, on the Aegean Sea in what is now Greece. According to Herodotus it was founded by settlers from Samothrace and stood near the city of Stryme, and the army of the Persian king Xerxes passed through it during his invasion of Greece in 480 BC. Its site is tentatively placed west of the modern city of Alexandroupolis.
