Mycenae

Mycenae is an archaeological site in Argolis, in the northeastern Peloponnese of Greece, about 120 kilometers southwest of Athens. In the second millennium BC it was one of the major centers of Greek civilization, a military stronghold that dominated much of southern Greece, Crete, the Cyclades and parts of southwestern Anatolia, reaching a population of about 30,000 at its height around 1350 BC; the period from roughly 1600 to 1100 BC is named Mycenaean after the site, which was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1999 alongside nearby Tiryns.
