Nafplio

Nafplio, also spelled Nafplion, is a coastal city in the Peloponnese region of Greece. It is the capital of the Argolis regional unit and a major tourist destination. The city has ancient origins and grew in importance during medieval times as a seaport under a succession of rulers, including Frankish lords, Venetians, and the Ottomans. Nafplio served as the first official capital of the modern Greek state, from 1827 to 1834. Its long history of foreign rule left behind notable fortifications, including the Palamidi fortress that still overlooks the city today.
