Oenoe (Icaria)

Oenoe was a small town on the northwest coast of the Greek island of Icaria. Its name is thought to derive from the wine grown on the nearby slopes of Mount Pramnos, though some scholars believe the town was instead a colony of the Attic town of the same name. During the 6th century BC, Oenoe and the rest of Icaria became part of the maritime empire of the tyrant Polycrates, and during the 5th century BC the Icarian cities of Oenoe and Thermae were members of the Athenian-led Delian League. During the 2nd century BC the island was colonized by Samos, and the Tauropolion, a temple to Artemis, was built at Oenoe in this period. Coins minted at the city depicted Artemis and a bull.
