Olenus (Aetolia)

Olenus, also called Olenos, was a town in the south of ancient Aetolia, between the Achelous and Evenus rivers. It was said to take its name from a son of Zeus or Hephaestus called Olenus, and it is mentioned in the Homeric Catalogue of Ships in the Iliad. Situated near Pleuron at the foot of Mount Aracynthus, its exact site is uncertain; ancient tradition held that the Aeolians destroyed it, and only a few traces of it remained by the time of the geographer Strabo. Roman poets used the adjective Olenius as equivalent to Aetolian, calling Tydeus of Calydon in Aetolia Olenius Tydeus.
