Pelinna

Pelinna, or Pelinnaeum, was an ancient Greek polis of Thessaly in the district of Histiaeotis, on a rocky height above the left bank of the Peneius River, near modern Palaiogardiki in the Trikala regional unit. The city held a noted temple of Zeus Pelinnaeus, and two inscribed Orphic gold tablets were recovered there in 1985. Pelinna allied with Philip II of Macedon in the fourth century BCE, was visited by Alexander the Great on his march, remained loyal to Macedon after Alexander's death, and was occupied by the Athamanians in 191 BCE before Roman forces recovered it; the city's walls once ran more than half a mile.
