Potidaea

Europe

Potidaea was an ancient Greek city on the Pallene peninsula in Chalcidice, in northern Greece, founded around 600 BC by colonists from Corinth at the narrowest point of the peninsula. The city joined the Delian League but revolted against Athens in 432 BC, an event that helped trigger the Peloponnesian War, and it fell after an Athenian siege of more than two years in 430 BC. Philip II of Macedon captured and enslaved the city in 356 BC, and it was refounded as Cassandreia in 316 BC, an important Macedonian city into Roman times; the original site was destroyed around 540 AD.
