Pronnoi

Southern Europe

Pronnoi, also known as Pronesus or Pronesos, was one of the four principal towns of the island of Cephallenia, situated on its southeastern coast. It joined the Athenian alliance along with the other towns of the island in 431 BCE. Polybius described it as a small but strongly defended fortress that Philip V of Macedon chose not to besiege, attacking Pale instead. A record by Livy of the surrender of Cephallenia to Rome in 189 BCE, naming the Nesiotae, Cranii, Palenses and Samaei, is thought to refer to the inhabitants of Pronnoi under a corrupted form of their name, since Pronnoi was one of the four towns of Cephallenia and one of only three that survived the destruction of Same.
