Pylus (Elis)

Pylus, also called Pylos, was a town in the district known as hollow Elis, described by Pausanias as situated on the mountain road from Elis to Olympia, at the point where the Ladon river flows into the Peneius. Pausanias placed it 80 stadia from the city of Elis, Diodorus gave the distance as 70 stadia, and Pliny the Elder gave it as 12 Roman miles, while Strabo, in a passage considered corrupt, located it near Mount Scollis. This settlement is distinct from the far better known Pylos of Messenia associated with Nestor in Homeric legend.
