Pyrrha (Lesbos)

Pyrrha, also spelled Pyrra, was a town on the coast of a deep bay on the western side of the island of Lesbos, its entrance so narrow that it was called the Euripus of Pyrrha. It lay eighty stadia from Mytilene and a hundred from Cape Malea, and during the Lesbian revolt it sided with Mytilene before being retaken by the Athenian commander Paches. By Strabo's time the town itself no longer existed, though its suburbs and harbor remained inhabited, and Pliny the Elder reports that Pyrrha had been swallowed by the sea.
