Pythion

Pythion was an ancient Greek city-state in Perrhaebia, a district of Thessaly in northern Greece, named for a temple of Apollo Pythius on one of the summits of Mount Olympus and sited at the foot of the mountain astride an important pass linking Macedonia to northeastern Thessaly. Its remains lie near the modern town of Pythio in the Larissa regional unit. Pythion joined the neighboring towns of Azorus and Doliche in a three-city alliance called a Tripolis, which was later annexed to Macedon, and the region saw fighting during the Roman-Seleucid War of 191 BC and the Third Macedonian War of 171 BC; excavations have uncovered the sanctuary of Apollo Pythius, including Augustan-era temples to Apollo and Poseidon and cult statues and inscriptions from earlier shrines.
