Rhypes

Rhypes, also spelled Rhypae or Rhypai, was a polis of ancient Achaea located thirty stadia west of Aegium and counted among the original twelve Achaean cities. It had dropped out of the Achaean League by the time of Polybius, who names Leontium in its place, but the city survived until the reign of Augustus, who destroyed it and resettled its people at Patrae, dividing its territory between Aegium and Pharae. Pausanias saw its ruins in the second century AD a short distance from the main road between Aegium and Patrae, and Strabo records that Aeschylus called it Rhypes stricken by the thunderbolt. Rhypes was the birthplace of Myscellus, the founder of Croton.
