Sarta (Chalcidice)

Sarta, also known as Sarte, was a maritime town on the Sithonia peninsula of ancient Chalcidice in what is now northern Greece, on the Singitic Gulf. The historian Herodotus names it among the cities near Mount Athos through which the Persian king Xerxes ordered a channel dug for his fleet in 480 BC, and it later belonged to the Athenian-led Delian League, appearing in tribute records between 434 and 415 BC. Its site is located about a mile south of the modern town of Sarti.
