Scarphe

Scarphe, or Scarpheia, was a town of the Epicnemidian Locrians near modern Molos in Greece, named by Homer in the Iliad's Catalogue of Ships. Strabo placed it ten stades from the sea and thirty from Thronium, occupying the former territory of the vanished town of Augeiae, and reported that it was destroyed by a tsunami following an earthquake in 426 BCE before later being rebuilt. It lay on the direct road from Elateia to Thermopylae, a route both Pausanias and Livy describe, and was the site of the Battle of Scarpheia in 146 BCE; it was one of only two Epicnemidian Locrian towns to mint its own coins.
