Scolus (Boeotia)

Scolus, also spelled Skolos, was a town of ancient Boeotia in Greece, mentioned by Homer in the Catalogue of Ships in the Iliad and described by the geographer Strabo as a village of Parasopia below Mount Cithaeron. The traveler Pausanias, describing the route from Plataea to Thebes, wrote that a traveler following the Asopus river for about 40 stadia would reach the ruins of Scolus, where an unfinished temple of Demeter and Kore stood. The Persian general Mardonius passed through Scolus on his march from Tanagra to Plataea, and the Spartans passed through it as well while preparing to invade Boeotia.
