Serres

Serres is a municipality and city in the region of Central Macedonia in Greece, the capital of the Serres regional unit and, with a population of 70,703 in 2021, the second largest city in Central Macedonia after Thessaloniki. It sits on a fertile plain about 24 kilometers northeast of the Strymon River and 69 kilometers from Thessaloniki, at an elevation of roughly 70 meters. First mentioned by Herodotus in the 5th century BC under the name Siris, Serres passed through Roman, Byzantine, Serbian and Ottoman rule before becoming part of modern Greece in 1913, and it now serves as an administrative and economic center for agriculture, the tobacco trade and textile manufacturing, alongside university campuses.
