Skopelos (town)

Skopelos is the main town on the island of Skopelos in the Sporades island group of the Thessaly region of Greece, recorded with 3,089 residents in the 2021 census though the population grows greatly in summer. According to legend the town was founded by Staphylos, a son of the god Dionysus, and the ancient city of Peparethus once occupied the site as a member of the Delian League. Peparethus was damaged by an earthquake during the Peloponnesian War in 426 BC and was destroyed by Philip V of Macedon in 200 BC to keep it from Roman control. The modern town has a port and a small heliport.
