Spartolus

Spartolus, also known as Spartolos, was the chief city of the Bottiaeans, likely in the region of Bottike in the northwest of ancient Chalcidice, in what is now Greece, not far from Olynthus. It was a member of the Delian League, paying a Thracian tribute of two to three and a half talents, until the Bottiaean and Chalkidian Leagues revolted against Athens in 429 BC at the start of the Peloponnesian War. The subsequent Battle of Spartolos, fought beneath the walls of the city, ended in the rout of the Athenian forces by the Chalcideans. The city was important enough to be named in the Peace of Nicias between Athens and Sparta in 421 BC, which left it neutral, though it appears to have rejoined the Athenian alliance sometime afterward. It is mentioned again in connection with the Spartan general Teleutias and his attack on Olynthus in 381 BC.
