Styra

Styra was a town on the west coast of ancient Euboea, north of Carystus and facing the Attic promontory of Cynosura, with its site surviving in the modern town of the same name. Homer lists it in the Iliad's Catalogue of Ships, and its inhabitants, originally Dryopian, later claimed descent from the Athenian deme of Steiria. Styra fought the Persians at Artemisium, Salamis, and Plataea during the Persian Wars of 480 to 479 BCE, after Persian forces first landed nearby at the island of Aegileia. It later paid tribute to Athens as a subject ally, and Athens stationed part of its fleet there in 356 BCE.
