Thyrea

Thyrea, also known as Thyraea or Thyreae, was a town of Cynuria in the ancient Peloponnese, contested between the neighboring regions of Argolis and Laconia. Its site is tentatively identified near Kastraki Meligou, in the North Kynouria municipality of the Arcadia prefecture. The town is best known as the site of the Battle of the Champions around 546 BCE, in which 300 picked warriors from Argos and Sparta fought over control of its territory, the fertile coastal plain called the Thyreatis. Aeginetans later settled at Thyrea after being expelled from their island by Athens, until Athenian forces destroyed the town during the Peloponnesian War.
