Tricca

Tricca was an ancient Greek city-state of Thessaly, in the district of Histiaeotis, on the left bank of the Peneius river. Tradition held that it took its name from a nymph called Tricca. Homer places the kingdom of the physician brothers Machaon and Podaleirius, who led Thessalian forces to Troy, at Tricca, and the city held a temple of Asclepius regarded in antiquity as the oldest and most illustrious of its kind. It later became a Christian bishopric and remains a titular see of the Roman Catholic Church. The site is now covered by the modern city of Trikala, and nineteenth century surveys found only scattered blocks of Hellenic masonry built into later walls.
