Zone was an ancient Greek city on the Aegean coast of Thrace, on a promontory west of the Lacus Stentoris in what is now Greece. Herodotus places it, together with Sale, near the promontory of Serreion where the fleet of the Persian king Xerxes landed in 480 BC, and Athenian records show it as a tribute-paying member of the Delian League by 422 BC. Excavations at a sanctuary of Apollo on the site uncovered more than two hundred pottery inscriptions in the Thracian language dating to the sixth and fifth centuries BC, an important source for that little-recorded tongue.
